Stephen Ireland could leave European football

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland has been linked with a move to the Middle East.

The Cork native has had minimal game-time for Stoke City this season with just eight appearances in all competitions.

The 29-year-old, who last played for Ireland in 2007 after the fallout from his lie about the passing of his grandmothers, is bound for Abu Dhabi-based Al Jazira.

But the Middle East club is remaining coy on reports of a move for the player, telling The National: "There is some negotiations going on with some players but we cannot reveal anything more than that because we need to respect their confidentiality."

The tabloid claims that he will replace Brazilian playmaker Thiago Neves if negotiations are successful.
