"It's obviously all change. I made the decision a month or so ago," he said.

"I had a great time at Reading, a couple of years there coaching straight from playing and last season was an unbelievable experience in getting to the playoffs final at Wembley and to go down to the last couple of kicks and go out on penalties was a real tough one.

"Obviously it took a little while to get over the summer but then you're straight back into the pre-season. But it was just a decision purely just for a fresh start, a bit of development for myself. I've been going to plenty of games over the last few weeks and I'm going to go out into clubs and actually bumped into Steve Walford at the Millwall game on Saturday, so maybe at some stage get over and take a little look at training over in Ireland as well in the build up to one of the international games. It's been a whirlwind few years just from finishing straight into the coaching."

Given how relentless coaching is at the highest level, Reid also explained that it gives him time to spend with family but that "for sure at some stage, the time will be right to go back into it".

On what he learned from Reading manager and ex-Manchester United, Netherlands and Lazio defender Jaap Stam was "a different way of playing" to the teams he had been previously involved in.

Reid was Anfield for us on Sunday alongside Nathan for live coverage of Arsenal's 4-0 humiliation at Liverpool and he also started off by giving his take on the situation for the Gunners, their players and manager Arsene Wenger which you can listen to on the podcast player.
