Swiss prosecutors say they have been given "interesting information" by a "so-called whistle-blower" in their investigation into FIFA and its suspended president Sepp Blatter.

A spokesperson for the Swiss attorney general says formal charges could be brought by the end of the year.

Blatter is the subject of criminal proceedings over suspected mismanagement and misuse of FIFA money, including a payment made to UEFA president Michel Platini.

The pair received FIFA bans of eight years last month.

'"A witness, a so-called whistleblower, gave us interesting information relevant to the case, which brought us markedly forward in the criminal investigation," said the Swiss attorney general's spokesperson Andre Marty to German broadcasting network ARD.
