“They can win it. It’s as simple as that.” ”“ Kenny Cunningham on Liverpool & the Champions League

Kenny Cunningham believes that Liverpool are in a great position to win the Champions League.

Kenny joined Joe on the line after their win in the quarter-final against Manchester City to put them into a semi-final with either Roma and – likely – Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“They can win it. It’s as simple as that. I don’t know if you’re looking for odds, but I had this conversation a couple of weeks ago and I made the point that prior to Christmas, had you asked me if Liverpool can win this competition, I’d have said no. But flip it on a couple of months, post the transfer window and the introduction of Van Dijk, and how the team has grown , evolved and matured... the argument now is ‘Yes, they could.’ This team can go and win the competition, without a doubt.”

“Would you make them favourites ahead of Real Madrid? Maybe not. But they are certainly more than capable, if they have their strongest team on the pitch.”

In terms of the game itself, Kenny was impressed with a tactical switch by Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool’s front line.

“[Klopp] slipped it in terms of moving Salah central and moved Firmino out onto the left-hand side, which was important because when I’ve seen him drop in there, [Salah] looks very comfortable in there. When he received the ball there from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, he just pops it first time into the feet of Mane, who still had a lot to do – it was a brilliant first touch from him.

“Fernandinho couldn’t recover [...] and get back goal-side on that occasion, the ball fell to Salah and Otamendi spreads his legs and drops to the ground to make himself two and a half feet tall. Salah finishes brilliantly over him into the corner and that’s the tie over.”
