'They need a better goalkeeper' - Kenny Cunningham

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 1-2 loss to bitter rivals Arsenal in the North London derby today. The Gunners opened the scoring through an own goal from Hugo Lloris. Bukayo Saka drove in from the right and fired a shot at Lloris, who parried it into his own net. A howler if there ever was one.

The French shot-stopper has looked rickety since his return from the World Cup, where in the final, he conceded 3 goals in normal time and 4 penalties in the shootout. Many believe that these events have Lloris shaken.

Spurs have Fraser Forster waiting in the wings if Lloris were to be dropped. The 6ft 7 giant is a capable goalkeeper, having been a stalwart at clubs like Celtic and Southampton. But it begs the question: should Spurs look for a new goalkeeper in this transfer window? Kenny Cunningham believes so.

Speaking to Stephen Doyle after their live commentary of the North London derby. The former Republic of Ireland captain believes it may be time for Spurs to invest in a new goalkeeper.

‘It drains confidence, simple as that,' said Cunningham. 'He has been void of confidence for the past 2 or 3 weeks, and arguably for the past 2 or 3 years, he has been making too many of the same mistakes. All good goalkeepers make good saves, any keeper applying his trade at a high level, and he produces a good amount of decent saves, do not get me wrong.’

‘In terms of dominating his penalty box, showing real personality and when those big moments arrive as they did for Aaron Ramsdale in the Arsenal goal. One v one against Heung Min Son and one v one against Sessegnon. If Spurs scored in those moments of the game, it would have been a very different outcome, but it does not happen because Ramsdale doesn’t allow it to. He doesn’t make a mistake.’

‘Lloris was not on top of his game again today, and those situations are arising too often; you have got to deal with it as a manager. You cannot allow this to continue to happen because it drains confidence in the team. Defenders, in particular. They look behind them, and they can’t trust who they see in their line of vision, and the manager has to rectify that.’

‘They need a better goalkeeper, simple as that.’
