Transfer Talk

All the talk this morning was dedicated to Louis van Gaal, as his cryptic press conference left football fans and journalists alike salivating at the thought of a "mystery striker".

It's almost as if van Gaal will wait until the eleventh hour to wheel out the new attacking outlet in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

Until then, the best we can do is speculate. Edinson Cavani and Thomas Muller were the names on everyone's lips in the lead up to this announcement, Racing Post reporting Cavani at odds 6-4 to relocate to Manchester.

Muller on the other hand, is reportedly itching to join his international teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger and German media outlet Sport1 are reporting that United are tabling a €100m bid to bring the forward to England.

Either striker would hope to bridge the gap up front and take some of the pressure off Wayne Rooney now that Robin van Persie has left for Fenerbahce  and Radamel Falcao is attempting to reboot his career (again) at Chelsea.

Speaking of the Londoners, Jose Mourinho is expected to step up his pursuit of Everton defender John Stones.

Stones is as viewed as the natural long-term successor for John Terry and having already had a 37m rejected, they are looking to further unsettle the defender with a second bid of almost €50m to land their man.

Martinez has publicly insisted that the defender is not for sale, but the further this saga drags out, the more he will look to cash-in on a wantaway defender.

Staying with the Premier League, Newcastle confirm the capture of Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht on a five-year deal subject to a work permit.

Sky Sports confirm the deal and Mitrovic is hoping to emulate club legends like Alan Shearer, who remains the Premier League's leading goalscorer on 260 goals.

The 20-year-old scored 23 goals in 44 appearances for Anderlecht last season and follows PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to St James' Park, with Steve McClaren looking to ensure that Newcastle don't end up in a relegation scrap again next year.

And finally, Arsene Wenger may have to make-do with his current French front-man after Real Madrid reject a big-money bid for the forward.

If reports in The Express are to be believed, Benitez may be yet to decide whether Benzema will remain in the Madrid ranks, but one thinks a move to the Premier League might revitalise the Frenchman's form (see Alexis Sanchez).
