UEFA's new president open to moving Champions League final outside Europe's borders

The new president of European football's governing body UEFA is open to playing the Champions League final outside of Europe.

Aleksander Ceferin, who succeeds Michel Platini in the organisation's leadership role, says travel times within the continent can be equivalent to flying to the United States.

He has used the example of going to Azerbaijan being as difficult for fans as reaching New York.

""I think it might be an idea in future but we have to speak about it. To go from Portugal to Azerbaijan for example is almost the same or the same as if you go to New York. For the fans it's no problem but we should see. It's a European competition so let's think about it," he said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press.

Slovenian Ceferin was elected president in September after Platini was banned from football-related activities.

The Football Association of Ireland had backed Ceferin's candidature.

This season's Champions League final will take place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on June 3rd.
