Ugo Ehiogu dies after training ground collapse

Former England international Ugo Ehiogu has died, Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed.

The 44-year-old, best known for spells at Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, was Tottenham's Under-23 coach. He collapsed at the team's training ground on Thursday.

Ehiogu suffered a heart attack at the team's training facilities in Enfield. He passed away in the early hours of Friday morning.

"Words cannot express the shock and sadness that we all feel at the Club. Ugo’s immense presence will be irreplaceable. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife Gemma and his family", Tottenham's Head of Coaching and Player Development John McDermott said.

Ehiogu played on four occasions for England between 1996 and 2002, scoring on one occasion. He also won three League Cup titles in a domestic career with Aston Villa (1994 and 1996) and Middlesbrough (2004).

After retiring in 2009, Ehiogu joined Tottenham's coaching staff. He was also part on England's underage backroom team in 2013.

Both Aston Villa and Middlesbrough said they were "deeply saddened" by the death.
