Van Gaal in pursuit of mystery striker

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted that a new striker is on his way to Old Trafford, but it’s not the one the media his writing about.

Reports since the beginning of the summer have linked the club with World Cup winner Thomas Muller, Edinson Cavani and Christian Benteke.

However, van Gaal this morning claimed there may be a surprise signing on the way to the club and informed the media that they would simply have to “wait and see”.

“He’s in the process,” Van Gaal said. “It’s not the striker that the media has written about. You have to wait and see. The transfer period is open until August 31.”

The news comes after the departure of loanee Radamel Falcao, who has since signed a loan deal with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Robin van Persie who joined Turkish side Fenerbahce earlier this month.

There was some speculation that Wayne Rooney would play as a lone striker and that the midfield would instead be bolstered, Barcelona’s Pedro was one of those rumoured to be interested in joining the club.

The former Netherlands manager also refused to rule out the signing of veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid.

“I cannot talk about these rumours. I have said already it’s a process and maybe Mr Ramos is in the process - you never know.”

Reports earlier this summer suggested that the Madrid stalwart would be part of a deal that would see him join United and David de Gea return to his native Madrid.

United are currently on pre-season tour in the US and have got off to a winning start with a 1-0 win over Club América over the weekend.
