Liverpool might have taken first blood against Stoke in their Capital One Cup tie, but last night's victory did come at a cost.

Already missing a string of key first-teamers through injury, Philippe Coutinho and Dejan Lovren were added to that medical room list.

But should the injury crisis really have come as a surprise?

As far back as two weeks ago, renowned and outspoken fitness coach Raymond Verheijen did predict that manager Jurgen Klopp would have a problem on his hands:

Tonight, Verheijen returned to Off The Ball to expand on his points and why he believes Liverpool have a mounting injury list under Klopp.

"When Klopp arrived they were entering a period of a lot of games in a relatively short period of time over Christmas and all these components together are a very tricky situation," he said, also explaining that studies show an increase in injuries when any new manager arrives at a club.

"And then the last thing a manager should do is introduce a totally new and much more demanding playing style like Klopp did with his pressing game like he did with Dortmund."

Verheijen feels it was a "mistake" for Klopp to introduce the demanding pressing style at this point of the season rather than later in the campaign when the fixture list becomes less hectic.

But he does not think Klopp's training methods are a contributing factor to the current injury crisis, although he feels that "teacher" type coaches like the former Borussia Dortmund can be more rigid in their overall approach to preparation wherever they go and also over time.

Verheijen also categorised Louis van Gaal and Pep Guardiola as part of the "teacher" school of coach.
