VIDEO: When Burnley defied the odds to beat Fergie's United

If Burnley's most recent spell out of the Premier League was a slightly barren half decade, then the previous absence from the top flight was a full on drought of 33 years.

The Clarets finally made their Premier League debut in 2009-10 under Owen Coyle, having come up via the Championship playoffs.

On the eve of that campaign, Coyle's troops were as unfancied as they are now, featuring Steven Fletcher up front, Andre Bikey at the back and a young Jay Rodriguez (granted he is still young at 25).

Whatever way the fixture computer works, it decided that Burnley needed a rude awakening to life in the top flight, pitting them against reigning champions Manchester United in just their second game of the season.

Indeed, after welcoming Alex Ferguson's team to Turf Moor, their next three stops were against 2008-09 FA Cup runners-up Everton, a Liverpool side that had just missed out on the title the previous season, and Chelsea who would go on to win the 2008-09 Premier League.

Daunting it may have been, but Coyle's Burnley side often showed plenty of spirit, and although it would not prove enough to keep the minnows from returning back to the Championship after an 18th place finish, they did manager one of their most famous nights through the boot of Robbie Blake ...

They still have plenty of spirit and sense of perspective in the squad, as evidenced by the Off The Ball interview with current manager Sean Dyche last night, and with Louis van Gaal's side struggling a little bit, a shock at Old Trafford could be on the cards.
