Sunderland are one point away from escaping the Premier League's relegation zone after a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.

Jermain Defoe made the most of a defensive mix-up between Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and defender Scott Dann to score the winning goal late in the second half.

The pair collided on the edge of the Palace penalty area to allow Defoe to slot into an empty net.

It puts Sunderland four points clear of bottom side Aston Villa

Meanwhile, the home side missed a chance to go sixth in the table.
