WATCH: Jose Mourinho defends Zlatan Ibrahimovic after Michael Owen criticism

What have Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Michael Owen in common? Both players joined Manchester United in the latter stages of their career.

Owen was 29 when he signed for Manchester United. Despite his young age, Owen's body was old for a 29-year-old, having suffered with injuries regularly through his career.

Ibrahimovic joined in the summer and the Old Trafford club look certain to be the Swede's final club in Europe. Despite signing a one-year-deal in the summer, the 35-year-old is ready to spend a second second season in Manchester.

That's where the comparisons end for the two players. Owen scored 17 goals in all competitions in his three seasons. Already, Ibrahimovic has scored 13 goals and health permitting, should beat Owen's record before the end of the season.

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of Manchester United's game with Crystal Palace, manager Jose Mourinho was quick to criticise Owen, when speaking to his colleague Jake Humphrey. Owen had previously criticised Ibrahimovic's role with the team.

"In spite of your colleague Michael Owen, doesn’t like him, the reality is Zlatan will score more goals in one season than Michael Owen [managed] in three seasons at Manchester United."

"He scored 17 goals in three seasons. Zlatan is almost there in six months so he’s not a bad choice for us."

Owen who was watching the segment, added that he was probably better value to the club, as he was on a fraction of the Swede's wages.
