WATCH: Niall Quinn has very fond memories of the time he morphed into a penalty-saving goalkeeper

Striker, international footballer, coach, chairman, pundit... and penalty-saving goalkeeper.

Niall Quinn has done it all and the Ireland legend was recently in town for the launch of Sky Sports' coverage of the 2016-17 Premier League season.

As well as chatting to Newstalk's Team 33 about the time he nearly joined Sporting Lisbon, he shared memories of another sometimes forgotten moment from his club career.

You can listen to the full chat on the podcast player or on iTunes:

Back at the end of the 1990-91 season, his Manchester City side came up against Derby County and he had scored earlier in the game with a lovely volley. Then misfortune struck.

City's keeper Tony Coton got a red card for bringing down Derby striker Dean Saunders in the box as he ran clean through on goal, which left a dilemma for City.

Well, it was a dilemma until Quinn quickly decided to take the gloves from Coton as the frustrated keeper walked off and the first task for Ireland's second highest international goalscorer was to save the resulting penalty, which you can watch here along with his earlier goal:

For a striker more used to beating goalkeepers, Quinn made an excellent save to keep out the spot kick and as an extra kick in the teeth for Derby, the result relegated the Rams from the top flight.

"That was fun. It still actually gets played a lot now," Quinn laughed as we reminded him off his mini mid-match job change.

"I saved a penalty and poor Dean Saunders. I meet Dean Saunders the odd time and he had a great career and he always says to me 'God, you ruined my career, Quinny' because I saved his penalty. And they got relegated the same day. It was a really tough gig for them."
