Argentina went into the final, without conceding a goal since the group stages. A semi final victory of the Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out kept the Argentine dream of winning the tournament on their rivals soil.
While Gonzalo Higuain's poor finishing may be remembered by most Argentine fans, Mario Gotze's goal ten minutes from time, endeared him to the German public and put his name into the history books alongside, Andres Iniesta, Fabio Grosso, Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane.
