Wenger keen for FIFA to change VAR offside rule

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants to change the offside rule amid countless VAR controversies and continuing confusion.

Wenger, who is currently FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, reportedly wants radical changes to the rule as he feels it applies too much favour to defenders.

The suggestion, should it be implemented, would see a player be deemed onside if any part of their body, which can legitimately score a goal, is level or behind the last defender, even if other parts are in front.

The Gunners legend is said to be eager to get this implementation through as soon as possible and changes could be seen as early as later this month.

"You will not be offside if any part of the body that can score a goal is in line with the last defender, even if other parts of the attacker's body are in front.

"That will sort it out and you will no longer have decisions about millimetres and a fraction of the attacker being in front of the defensive line."

The proposals, which the Frenchman has drafted, will be considered at the IFAB AGM in Belfast on February 29th.

England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales will each have one of the eight votes, which FIFA hold the remainder of.

Six votes are required for any law change to be implemented, and should the suggestion be passed, the rule change would come into play on June 1st.

It would, therefore, be used at the summer's Euro 2020 finals.

70-year-old Wenger is also reportedly keen to implement other changes to VAR such as fas being able to see and hear communication between officials and on-pitch referees and stadiums having to install giant screens to ensure consistency.
