Stephen Kenny: “We're looking to absolutely outplay them…”

Dundalk aren't simply look to progress to the next round of Champions League qualification tonight when they face face BATE Borisov. They’re aiming to completely outclass their Belarusian counterparts.

The 11-time domestic Premier League winners visit Oriel Park tonight, leading 2-1 on aggregate and will be hoping to keep the Louth side at bay for 90 minutes.

A 1-0 win will be enough for Dundalk to progress, where they will face either Hungarian side Videoton or Welsh neighbours The New Saints.

By comparison, neither of their prospective opponents are too daunting, but it is worth mentioning that Dundalk still face a big task tonight.

“Sometimes to get credibility within different spheres of Irish life and elements of the media, you have to make your mark on the European stage," Kenny said ahead of the 3,200 sell-out match.

Sure the money would be nice, a €1.2m payout reward for the winner, but for Kenny it’s all about making a mark on the big stage.

“What they’ve achieved as a club is nothing short of phenomenal. They really are a standout club for what they’ve achieved for a club of their size in Europe.

“From where they’ve come from to get to the group stages so regularly and take on some of the giants and get results... they haven’t done that being naive or a poor side.

“But we’re not looking to [just get over the line]; we’re looking to take on a team that has played in the group stages, has beaten Bayern Munich in the group stages when they won [the competition in 2013] and we’re looking to absolutely outplay them at home. That’s our ambition.”

Speaking on Newstalk Breaksfast, former Sligo Rovers manager, Owen Heary, expects the players to go into the game with a certain mental toughness.

"It’s a totally different mindset. When you’re playing League of Ireland you know what to expect, you know the players inside out.

“They’ll be playing against European players of a higher standard, who will be technically better than a lot of players here in Ireland.”

Heary, who was part of the famous Shelbourne side that took on Deportivo more than a decade ago, also thinks that the players won’t be too focused on the monetary reward of progressing to the next stage.

“They’ll be focused more on the prestige of getting through the round and beating a European team” he said.

“I know the players in this league and all they think about is getting through, seeing who they get in the next round and progressing further.”

The League of Ireland champions certainly won’t fear BATE and will hope to write their own names into Irish footballing folklore.

Kick off tonight is at 7.45.
