Why Southampton actually had little to worry about this summer

As the new Premier League season dawned, it would have been natural for those at Southampton to be wearing the longest of long faces.

The summer had been seemingly traumatic after selling key first team players Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and Calum Chambers - albeit for large fees.

Yet their start to the season has been nothing short of brilliant under new manager Ronald Koeman and with new signings like Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle hitting the ground running.

And a brilliant article in The Telegraph really sets out why worries about the Saints were unfounded and gives us the inside track on one of the best run clubs in the world.

Tonight, that article's author Jeremy Wilson joined us on the show to tell us how Southampton have continued to impress.

He told us about the Football Development Centre which underpins a lot of the good work the club do and also means upheaval of a managerial or squad nature does not affect the club's progress.

Wilson also explained the club's process in terms of rejuvenating and improving players like Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis who have jumped up a level or found a new lease of life amid the excellent structures around them.

Former chairman Nicola Cortese, who played a key role in developing the club, left midway through last season after clashing with the owner, yet it has not hampered the club's progress and Wilson explained how they kept the show on the road after the driving force's departure.

And the added bonus according to Wilson is that the squad is actually stronger after the summer merry-go-round - and are €30 million better off.
