"If I'm truthful, it came around accidentally."

On Monday night, Kilkenny hurling legend Eddie Brennan was announced as the new Laois senior manager.

The eight time All Ireland winner joined Joe Molloy on the show and explained how the appointment came about.

"A friend of mine mentioned it in passing and I said, 'Yeah,'" said Brennan, who retired from inter-county duty back in 2012 before taking on the Kilkenny Under-21 role.

"I said I'd be interested in talking to someone and it escalated quickly from there. And it was only when I got a phonecall from the committee that were tasked with setting it up that I really put the thinking cap on and said, 'What am I going to do here?'

"Look, I suppose I lived in Portlaoise for seven years. I would have been familiar with the setup there and certainly the potential of some of the players and maybe having a finger on the pulse locally, so in a way there's probably a connection there.

"So after that, I sat down and it was a challenge that appeals to me."

Discussing the process which included an interview process, he also added that there were two other candidates for the role apart from himself.

In terms of how he wants to implement his own philosophy of the game on a senior team, he said, "The challenge is can I now transfer my experiences as a player and see players develop into better players."

And in terms of targets for Laois for next year and beyond, Brennan is aiming to make a mark on Division 1B and the Joe McDonagh Cup which he feels getting to the final of the latter is not an unrealistic ambition.

"Sometimes we're a little bit coy, trying to hold back on what our targets are but they're the two big competitions."
