The England cricketers suffered a demoralising defeat in the Cricket World Cup to Australia.

The 64-run loss to the reigning World Champions at Lord's has left their hopes of making it to the semi-final stages in the balance.

With the win, Australia has been the first team to secure their place in the last four of the competition, which the country has won on five separate occasions.

England couldn't really get going throughout the day in London, with Ben Stokes the only player able to notch up any resistance with 89 runs, however, their inability to build a solid partnership cost them.

After the first innings the Australians had given the host 285 runs to chase.

The English captain Eoin Morgan from Dublin, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and James Vince all had been taken early by the Australian bowlers leaving them on 53/4.

Ben Stokes was the only player able to notch up any resistance with 89 runs, however, their inability to build a solid partnership cost them overall.

Speaking after the loss, captain Eoin Morgan said, "losing early wickets is ideal, and not managing to make a substantial partnership to winning the game - hence getting outplayed."

Meanwhile, Australian captain Aaron Finch who got a century said his players needed a lot of credit for their performance against top opposition:

"England are a stand-out side and they're a ten that can tear you apart with a ball and a bat at certain stages. Even when we saw today, we got them four down quite quickly and then Stokes and Butler built a partnership."

They must now win their remaining two games in the group to clinch a top-four finish and continue their tournament.

They will now play India on Sunday at Edgbaston in Birmingham, while their group stage games finish against New Zealand on July 3rd in Chester.
