It was always going to be a tall order for Mohamed Salah to match his performances from last season.

The Egyptian forward scored 44 goals in all competitions last season but he has been more muted early on for Liverpool in this campaign.

The 26 year old has netted three goals in 11 games thus far since the season began but has also been substituted more than once by manager Jurgen Klopp.

Leeds and Ireland legend John Giles feels that is the wrong way to go about it when dealing with a player who doesn't appear as confident as usual.

The full chat with John Giles:

"I don't think Klopp did him any favours in the first few matches and he subbed him a couple of times," he told us on our weekly Thursday chat, before pointing out the detrimental effect being subbed off can have on players from his own days at Don Revie's Leeds in the '60s and '70s.

"I think that's the worst thing you can do for anyone whose confidence is a bit low anyway. When you're being taken off as a professional footballer, actually, you're being humiliated in front of 50,000 people. That's what you feel like and nobody likes it. So when he was taken off in the couple of matches, he would really feel bad about this."

As for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United, he feels the comeback from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle on Saturday could prove to be detrimental for the manager, given that it appeared to be a player-driven rise from the ashes.

"Looking back on this, this could be a bad day for Mourinho because the talk we heard is that the players had a big say at half time... that's not Mourinho," said John.
