Pep Guardiola warns players that Real are the one team that "can overcome this situation"

Manchester City are in the driving seat to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League but Pep Guardiola says the tie against Real Madrid is "not over."

City came from behind to win 2-1 at the Bernabeu in their first European game since the club was handed a two-season ban by UEFA for a breach of financial fair play rules.

Isco gave Real the lead on the hour mark and the home side came close to scoring a second but the introduction of Raheem Sterling for the final 20 minutes was key.

Gabriel Jesus equalised 12 minutes from time and Kevin de Bruyne scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 86th minute after Sterling was fouled.

Real also had Sergio Ramos sent off so he'll miss the second leg at the Etihad in three weeks time.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game Guardiola said it was a job half done.

"We tried to come here to win the game and we did. This is just the first part.

"If one team can overcome this situation, it’s this club.

"I’m so proud. This is the first step. It’s not over. We can enjoy the moment.

"On Sunday we have a final. We’ll keep going in the Premier League and prepare for the second game against Real Madrid."

The one negative for City was an injury to Aymeric Laporte in the first half.

The French defender was replaced by Fernandinho in the first half in only his fourth appearance since recovering from a serious knee injury that had kept him out for much of the season.
