Dublin defender Philly McMahon has backed Bernard Brogan to bounce back from a serious knee injury suffered in training.

The veteran forward reportedly underwent surgery after damaging his cruciate knee ligament.

Brogan previously tore his anterior cruciate ligament in 2006 and spent almost a year before playing football again.

The 33-year-old is facing a long road to recovery, McMahon is confident Brogan can continue his career despite the set-back. He was a guest with Dermot and Dave on Today FM:

"I haven't really spoken to him, but I'm sure he'll be back and ready to go again once he has got his rehabilitation done. He's been through it before so he'll know what the process is."

The Dubliner turns 34 this April, and had previously indicated in an interview last November that 2018 would be his last year in blue.

The road to recovery after surgery could take up to 9 months, leaving the former Footballer of the Year unlikely to be ready to return until 2019.

"Throughout the summer I wasn't sure what I'd do," Brogan said last November.

"I had some good form and bad form and was getting only so much game-time. So I was thinking, 'will I give it another go or is my time gone?' and I was rolling that around in my head.

"I sat down with Jim and said what I felt and where I thought I was at. After I had my say, Jim indicated that he wanted me around and wanted me back and that there was a role for me."

Brogan has won 5 All Ireland SFC titles with Dublin, been on a Leinster championship winning team 12 times, won 4 Allianz League titles and been an All Star on 4 occasions.

McMahon was speaking to Dermot and Dave on Today FM as he prepared to launch the 'HalfTimeTalk' initiative.

It is a 16 week programme comprised of 14 participants which aims to engage, educate and empower young people between the ages of 18 and 29.

Founded by McMahon, the movement equips participants with the necessary skills to unlock their potential and turn their lives around by changing their behaviours and making better choices.
