Shane Supple worried about modern goalkeeping trends

This week on Team 33, our special guest was former Bohemians and Ipswich goalkeeper Shane Supple.

The 32-year-old is now retired but was also back-up to Dublin GAA goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton.

Supple has seen many of the pitfalls in modern football and was especially compelling on the way the game is doing many players a disservice when it comes to development of character.

You can listen to the full interview with Shane Supple just below or here. Or you can subscribe/stream on iTunes for free. For Liverpool fans, you'll find in-depth interviews with Stig Inge Bjornebye and Markus Babbel. Plus, Liverpool throw-in-coach Thomas Gronnemark also spoke to us recently.

But he also shared his worries about trends in modern goalkeeping.

"On the soccer side of things, the game has definitely evolved - not necessarily in a good way," he told us.

Technically Not As Strong

"I think a lot of attention has gone off the basics of goalkeeping. Obviously, the use of your feet when you're at Man City or Liverpool maybe is more important.

"I just think technically, they're not as strong as they would have been in the past. And some of the goals that you see conceded, I just think it's a lack of work on that side of the game, where more emphasis is put on working with your feet and playing out from the back - pinging that sidewinder 60-70 yards onto someone's chest up the pitch.

"And you see young lads nowadays and I would've coached a lot of lads over the years on it. A lot of times, that's all they want to do. Whereas for me, I would've always been drilled on the basics like handling and getting that right. Getting your shape and your technique right.

"I found that got me out of a lot of trouble and especially as you get a bit older. I just think they've gone away from that an awful lot. And I see that nowadays and I just worry about it."

Supple also discussed the role of a goalkeeper in Jim Gavin's Dublin and how that compares to soccer.
