LISTEN: The good, bad and ugly of songs about footballers

Some of the great concept albums often have songs built around a character.

Take Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage for example.

Well, the same can be said of songs about footballers. There are many in existence and some are of questionable quality, to say the least.

That was something we looked at on Team 33 this week, with each of us choosing a well-known song and explaining the origin.

So tunes about Niall Quinn, ex-Italy striker Luca Toni and former (technically) Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski were our choices and there is an interesting tale about the effect Quinn's song had on him and some stranded Sunderland fans.

Listen in to our 'Songs about footballers' segment via the podcast or download via iTunes. Skip 17 minutes in for that short segment, to hear those three tunes and more.

Keep up to date with the show or get in touch via our Twitter page or also on our Facebook page.

But what about the songs that did not make the cut on this week's show?

Here are a few examples of tunes about footballers that are of divergent quality and if we've overlooked any glaring ones, you can send us in your examples.

The Tractors - Pat Nevin's Eyes

One fact about Off The Ball's Monday night football pundit Pat Nevin is that the former Chelsea and Everton midfielder is a respected DJ. Given his musical tastes, we don't know what he makes of this tune from the mid-80s.

Ruff Sqwad Ft. Tinchy Stryder - Why Always Me (Mario Balotelli)?

Even rapper Tinchy Stryder has meddled in this overlooked genre of music and it's one of the most reliable players of all-time who gets pride of place in the chorus.

One from the terraces - The Kolo Song

As Joe said, songs created on the terraces are generally better. The Kolo song is very simple and so effective that Mr Toure himself likes it.

The Left Foot Company - Big Sam

This song by Finnish band The Left Foot Company is not about Sam Allardyce. Like the Kolo song - except with a bigger chorus and some instruments - it's about a Liverpool defender - former Reds man Sami Hyypia:
