After winning six medals in London four years ago, the Irish team are hoping to at least match that total in Rio de Janeiro this year.
Competing in 14 sports, Ireland have sent a team of 77 athletes to Brazil to compete against the World's elite. Some of the competitors are first-time Olympians, while others have competed in Beijing and London.
Here is the 77-strong team, including some of Ireland's medal prospects.
Paddy Barnes (Boxing)
Barnes is Ireland's flag-bearer in the Opening Ceremony and is competing in his third Games. The Belfast native has already won two bronze medals in Beijing and London. He is hoping to medal again in Brazil, but this time he wants gold.

Michael Conlan (Boxing)
Conlan won a bronze medal four years ago in London as a 20-year-old. The Bantamweight became World Champion last year and wants to add an Olympic gold medal to his CV in Brazil. He is expected to turn professional later this year.

Arthur Lanigan-O'Keeffe (Modern Pentathlon)
Lanigan-O'Keeffe's preparations for Rio could not be any more different from four years ago. A late call-up to the London Games in 2012, Lanigan-O'Keeffe qualified for these Games when he won the European Championships last year and could be a household name in a few weeks time.

Daniel Martin (Cycling)
A top-ten finish in the Tour de France last month, has seen Martin's stock rise even further in World cycling. The hilly course in Rio, should suit Martin's bid for a medal. He has previously won some One-Day Classics with similar courses to what he will fare with in Brazil.

Annalise Murphy (Sailing)
The Rathfarnham sailor looked on course to win a medal in London four years ago, until the very last race in the Laser Radial class when she dropped to fourth place. Since the heartbreak of 2012, Murphy's focus has been solely on 2016. It may now be her time.

Katie Taylor (Boxing)
What needs to be said about Taylor that has not already been said. The Bray fighter is looking to become a two-time Olympic champion. After losing in the World Championships earlier this year, Taylor will be set to try and show she is still the best around.
