Vickery on how Man United's South American newcomers will adapt

The big question mark over Radamel Falcao's move to Manchester United has not been about his recovery from a serious knee injury.

It has tended to be about whether he is really what the club needs and how he fits into a squad that is top-heavy when it comes to attacking options.

Very few know what Falcao brings as much as BBC South American football expert Tim Vickery and he joined us on tonight's show to talk about the Colombian's transfer as well as United's two Argentinian signings this summer.

"There are very few better penalty area predators in the world game than Radamel Falcao Garcia. That's all he is. He's not one of those players with the versatility that Louis Van Gaal likes so much. He is a front-to-goal centre-forward who can finish right foot, left foot, in the air and he is a force of nature," said Tim, who re-emphasized that Falcao is not great when his back is to goal - an assertion backed up by the fact that Falcao has not registered a single assist in just over two years.

Falcao is very reliant on his supply lines and Tim explained how Colombia's World Cup star James Rodriguez' development as a top level attacking midfielder helped his former Monaco team-mate to improve his international record.

"He needs wingers or quality midfielders giving him assistance," he surmised.

Tim believes the combination of Di Maria (a provider of a La Liga high of 17 assists last season) and Falcao is potentially "wonderful", due to Argentinian's crossing ability and searing pace.

However, he does not think that there is any point playing Di Maria as a left wing-back in Van Gaal's favoured 3-5-2 and is interested to see how the Argentina international's versatility will be utilized during the coming season.

Rojo, who he describes as a "little bit fiery", also brings versatility as a left-back or centre-back which makes him a good option in a back three or back four.

But he thinks that Rojo's transfer value only shot up on the back of his performance for Argentina during their run to the World Cup final, rather than on consistent club form. And he also shared his worry that the former Sporting Lisbon defender's deficiencies will be exposed in the Premier League.

"It wouldn't surprise me if at the end of the season we'll see that Marcos Rojo has played fewer games for United than either Di Maria or Falcao Garcia."
