Adam Griggs addresses Niamh Briggs situation

Ireland women's head coach Adam Griggs says the door is not closed on a Niamh Briggs return.

However, he says Ireland are focused on developing their current crop of out-halves.

He was speaking to Off The Ball's Maire Treasa Ni Cheallaigh after the Irish side fell to a 51-7 defeat against England in their Six Nations opener.

They conceded eight tries in the process in Donnybrook.

But will Griggs look to bring Briggs back into the fold?

"She's playing AIL at the moment and like any one in the AIL, she's available for selection if we have injuries," he said.

"At this point, we've spoken about it and we've got our out-halves that are there at the moment. They're still working away and we're putting faith in them. We're making sure they're taken learnings from this as well. That's basically what we're looking at."

Tough to swallow

He also added in regards to Briggs' good form, that "playing AIL is a completely different beast to playing England in a Six Nations match".

He also expressed his disappointment at the defeat to England.

"It's definitely disappointing to get that scoreline put on us at home. It was tough to swallow," Griggs said.

"You've got to look at some positives as well. Certainly in the first half, we created a few chances and we just couldn't capitalise on them.

"But you've got to give credit to England. That defensive wall that they had was pretty rock solid. For them to be able to flip that around and transition into attack, it's a different beast.

"They were very quick, very strong and their physicality told on us in the end."
