David Preece on Loris Karius: "It'd be a mistake to run away and go somewhere else"

Former Sunderland keeper David Preece joined Tuesday's OTB AM to reflect on Loris Karius' errors in the Champions League final at the weekend.

The goalkeeper endured a torrid night after two glaring mistakes ultimately cost the Reds any chance of winning a sixth European Cup in Kiev against Real Madrid.

"The one thing that sticks out for me that makes the mistakes more baffling is that he looked confident throughout the game," he told Ger. "It wasn't a nervy performance by him. We've seen that in the past - certainly last season but he seemed to have eradicated that from his game this year and the confidence shown in him by Klopp - it was returned in full.

"He has looked every inch the keeper he thought he was going to buy and that first goal, it's something that will never happen to him again. He's in the team because his distribution is excellent.

"He sets attacks off very quickly. Obviously if he gets the ball off past Benzema then they've got a numerical advantage further up the field that could exploit. You've probably got to give credit to Benzema in this case as well because he doesn't switch off, he doesn't allow the easy ball to get past him and he reacts well there just to stick out a leg a direct it goal-ward but it's one of those where he's just mis-judged the situation."

Karius future at the club has come under scrutiny given the magnitude of the blunders but Preece thinks he should stay at Anfield to right the wrongs from that night.

"The problem he's got at the moment is that he's got almost two months now to dwell on this. To move on and recover and to start his rehabilitation - he needs to get back into training.

"When you get back to training sessions, you can work out your frustrations, you can work hard and get that little bit of anger out of you because there'll be a lot of self-flagellation and he'll be beating himself over this a lot and then move on and get into the next game...he's got to look at this as a challenge."

"From my point of view, I think it would be a mistake to run away and go somewhere else. There's a lot of people saying this morning that that's what he has to do to move on but I don't see that.

"If he leaves Liverpool this summer which I honestly can't see him doing that - if he does leave this summer then it will always be there, it will always be hanging around in the background.

"And, even the fact that he didn't try and rectify it and put things right - that will be more of a burden on him and more of a shadow over him so I think the best thing for him now is to get on with things. He won't be able to get over it this summer and it'll be eating away at him all summer until they get back pre-season training."
