"It's just like a tsunami" - Pat Nevin on Anfield's 'magic'

Pat Nevin is one to listen to when it comes to talking about football atmosphere. Having played for Chelsea, Celtic and Everton, he has been subjected to some of the highest-intensity matches in English and Scottish football.

For the first twenty minutes last night, there was a danger that the verbal flame around Anfield could be put out. Mohamed Salah kept the fire going, and Pat was effusive in his praise for Liverpool fans and players alike.

"I would call it magical. I thought it was a magical night. Anyone who has played at Anfield against Liverpool knows that feeling. It's just like a tsunami - it's coming towards you.

"It is the players, it is the fans, it is the occasion - it's everything. It just feels as if they have got seventeen players on the field and that you have got seven."

"It's a horrible feeling. By the way, all their players are hell of a good too.

"The whole thing was like one of the great nights at Anfield. I've got to say that a lot of that is with the fans - they built it up before the game, they kept the noise levels up, they noticed the periods where the opposition would have the ball for short periods of time and the booing and the hassling they were giving them helps their own players."

But it wasn't just the fans that Pat was mightily impressed by.

"I'm beginning to wonder if Mo Salah is really human at the moment. He is just so brilliant.

"He gets the ball on his left foot with that one that he turns and puts in the top corner. You kind of feel 'He's going to score here - I know you're at a corner, I know you're twenty yards out, I know you're at a terrible angle, but you're going to put that in the top back corner!'"
