“It’s typical of Manchester City” ”“ John Giles reflects on derby defeat

John Giles believes Manchester’s City second half capitulation in their 3-2 defeat to rivals Manchester United was ‘typical’ of their defensive frailties.

Pep Guardiola’s side squandered their chance to confirm their status as Premier League champions in the ideal fashion as they squandered a two-goal lead to lose against their neighbours.

Man City remain on course to lift the Premier League title in the coming weeks but their confidence will have taken a knock after conceding three goals in two consecutive defeats to Liverpool and Manchester United.

And Giles, speaking alongside former Republic of Ireland international Clinton Morrison, believes City failed to deliver the defensive showing their attacking display merited.

“United have some good players, undoubtedly,” Giles told Off The Ball.

“Clinton [Morrison] was talking about[Ilkay] Gundogan picking up [Paul] Pogba. Why would he be picking up Pogba?

“It’s typical of Manchester City that they’re brilliant going forward but not so good at defending situations like that –and they paid the price for it.

“The game could have been all over but it wasn’t. You have two halves to play and they slipped up badly at defending themselves.

“That’s the game. You attack well but you also have to defend well and they didn’t do that. And Manchester United took advantage of that.”

Giles and Morrison were speaking at Dtwo Bar, Garden and Nightclub in association with Carling, the official beer of the Premier League.
