Kieran Donaghy and Liam McHale dissect Mayo's setback

There was no doubt about the weekend's standout result in Gaelic football: Roscommon beating Mayo.

The latter had come into the Connacht Championship off the back of an Allianz League-winning campaign.

But they'll have to go the long way through the qualifiers to continue harbouring ambitions of All-Ireland glory.

Ex-Kerry All-Ireland winner Kieran Donaghy and Mayo legend Liam McHale joined us to analyse.

Donaghy felt both teams struggled with the conditions as the match wore on. But he also cited Cillian O'Connor's absence as a factor.

But he also pointed out that it would remiss not to mention how good a side Roscommon have been.

"Mayo will have a lot of stuff to look forward to and they'll be right here," he said.

"There'll be no panic in that Mayo dressing room because they're so experienced. They'll be disappointed and there'll be people who have to be called out."

Wasteful

McHale didn't expect James Horan's side to be "as wasteful as they were".

"Some of the wides were really poor and a lot of the players in the Mayo set-up who will be very disappointed," he said.

"They had over 40 attacks but they just didn't execute in front of goal. And when Mayo are confronted with these mass defences, they seem to struggle a little bit.

"Every wide you kick in a tight game like that takes away your confidence and energy. That's exactly what happened at the end. The wide count eventually got to the players and they struggled because of that."

And he also felt "panic" crept into Mayo's game late on. But he does fancy them to navigate their way to the Super 8s unlike in 2018.

"I think they'll get into the Super 8s and I think they'll get into the All-Ireland semi-finals," he predicted.
