"Matt Doherty's performance tonight has put real pressure on Coleman" - Brian Kerr

Brian Kerr believes Matt Doherty's performance against Denmark has heaped pressure on captain Seamus Coleman.

Doherty was at fault for Denmark's goal in the 1-1 draw. But the Wolves right-back also scored the equaliser at the other end, alongside other good moments.

Suspension ruled Coleman out of tonight's crucial Euro 2020 qualifier. And Doherty's performance in his absence was a highlight for Brian Kerr.

He was speaking to Nathan Murphy at the Aviva Stadium after the full-time whistle had blown and consigned Ireland to the playoffs.

"Matt Doherty's performance tonight has put real pressure on Seamus Coleman," he said.

"And Mick is going to have to make that decision. But I think he did enough tonight to earn the starting place for the playoff."

Good in possession

While the Wolves player did make a defensive error, Kerr highlighted his other contributions.

"I feel Doherty did really well in possession of the ball tonight," said the former Ireland boss.

"His passing was clever and he gets up and scores a goal. Once again, it's a defender scoring a goal for us.

"But that's for Mick to analyse. I'm just saying, based on what we've seen of Doherty so far where after Gibraltar it was easy for Mick to discount the idea of both of them playing together and maybe discount Doherty on the left, tonight he's put it up to him a bit."
