'My son (11) was punched in the face ... the aggressor was cheered by his parents'

Earlier this week, Dublin footballer Davey Byrne suffered facial injuries in an incident in a recent challenge match with Armagh.

That prompted a chat about GAA culture when it comes to the issue of violent acts on the pitch on Off The Ball tonight with Ger and Joe.

"I remember the first time I saw this club game in Kildare, a hurling game. My mate's younger brother was playing senior - he was young enough - and this 'oul lad running behind him just smashes the hurl over his back. First five minutes ... and the ball was the other end of the pitch. Sideline goes nuts, fat 'oul fella shrugs his shoulders and walks away. Referee didn't see it and I don't think there was a repercussion," said Joe of an incident he once saw.

And listeners sent in many stories of incidents they have witnessed or experienced at GAA matches, including this one:

"My 11-year-old son was punched in the face last year off the ball last year in a football match last year in West Cork two minutes after coming on as the full-forward sub. The aggressor was cheered by his parents. My son is playing cricket now. The sledging can be awful but I've never seen any kids fighting."
