'I wouldn't allow myself to be treated like that by a manager'

At the weekend, it was revealed that two Clare senior hurlers had left the Banner panel after a "breach of discipline".

One of the players, Davy O’Halloran, has said he felt "humiliated" by his treatment by manager Davy Fitzgerald with a three-week punishment set out by the 2013 All-Ireland winners.

That included not being allowed to train with the first team for that allotted period, not being allowed to wear the team gear and not being allowed to talk with team-mates.

Tonight on Off The Ball, Joe Molloy and Colm 'Wooly' Parkinson discussed the issue on air and Wooly felt the punishments were harsh.

"I think if Davy just had them training on their own and every morning for a week, that seems fair enough. But over a three-week prolonged period with the isolation and the no dialogue allowed between you and your team-mates - Davy O'Halloran said he felt humiliated - I don't blame him for that. I would feel humiliated as well. Under no circumstances would I allow myself to be treated like that by a manager in a sport that I'm an amateur in and I'm playing voluntarily," said Wooly, who also shared an experience of a punishment he had received from his own inter-county days.

But he also expanded one of the areas under scrutiny.

"Players should strike. Players should not accept this. It's an amateur game. They've won an All-Ireland two years ago. How can you stand by and allow this kind of carry-on? I couldn't," he said.
